FTJ On-line Auction is a Great Success!

FTJ On-line Auction is a Great Success! Thanks to everyone who participated in our first on-line auction, and to all the generous donors of the great items that were up for bidding. We especially enjoyed a few serious bidding wars - a three year subscription to Lilith Magazine, Divine Chocolate's and Equal Exchange's gift baskets (lots of FTJers are serious chocoholics!), and a gift certificate to Baksheesh, a fabulous fair trade store in Sonoma. All the money raised will be used for our outreach and educational activities.

The Rabbinical Assembly Goes Fair Trade!

RA Resolution Text
The Rabbinical Assembly, the international association of Conservative rabbis since its founding in 1901, adopted a resolution in support of Fair Trade Practices in 2012, and is already implementing it! The Resolution "encourages its members to educate their communities about Fair Trade, to endorse and advocate Fair Trade, and purchase Fair Trade goods, when feasible, both individually and in their communities, and use Fair Trade goods when feasible." (full Resolution text available here). Starting in June coffee, tea and chocolate served at the RA office will be Fair Trade, and informational signs and post cards (designed with FTJ's assistance) will be on display and distributed to attendees.

Fair Trade News - Fair Trader Wins Business for Peace Award

Dean CyconDean Cycon, founder and owner of Dean's Beans Organic Coffee Company, is one of five winners of the 2013 Oslo Business for Peace Foundation award. The award goes to "exemplary leaders who make significant efforts in responsible business conduct. It is the highest form of recognition given to business leaders for fostering peace and stability."

He has worked for more than 25 years on development issues in indigenous communities, including coffee-producing villages around the world. He created Dean’s Beans to prove that businesses can promote positive economic, social and environmental change in developing countries, and be profitable at the same time. The company designs and funds people-centered development projects in coffee-producing areas in partnership with growers, and returns a percentage of profits to the growers as a “social equity premium”. Mr Cycon is a co-founder of Coffee Kids (a non-profit development group), and of Cooperative Coffees, the world’s first fair trade roaster’s cooperative.
