Advocate of Philippine Fair Trade (Philippines)

The dreidel is made in a depressed urban area of Manila, the Philippines, by a collective of talented mothers who are affiliated with Advocate of Philippine Fair Trade, Inc., a nonprofit organizing working in seven urban areas to create fair trade market centers.

The photo features Venus, one of the artists which makes the dreidels from recycled paper.

Loreta Rafisura, President, Salay Handmade Paper Industries, Cagayan de Oro, Philippines notes that “Fair Trade is the best thing that happened to us. We started out as a hodgepodge group of housewives, out-of-school youths and elderly rural folk turning cogon grass into paper with our hands. Today we have 150 regular workers and about 200 more working in their homes.”
