Artisan Story

The weavers from Agua Caliente are really excited, because their new looms have been installed which were purchased, in part, using a MayaWorks microcredit loan, as well as a small grant. These artisans are already well known for their handwoven challah covers and tallit bags. With these looms, the weavers will create a new product that already promises to be a great seller -- a brocaded tallit. (We've seen the sample and it's gorgeous!)

The women have been hard at work perfecting the tallit. While the artisans are adept at creating shawls, this one has been particularly challenging because it requires significant sewing which is not something that comes naturally to weavers. They persevered, however, and have created a beautiful new product; we expect them to arrive in September/October. This is good news for the artisans, as they will be able to pay off their loan in a shorter time.

Advocacy Corner

Dunkin’ Donuts coffeeDunkin’ Donuts is the first stop of the day for millions of Americans for their daily coffee and donut. That's why Dunkin’ is the largest retailer of coffee by the cup in America. Dunkin’ Donuts is ending its commitment to Fair Trade, hurting many coffee farmers. These farmers and communities could lose half their income and not have enough money to go to school. Tell Dunkin’ not to turn its back on Fair Trade coffee farmers.

Fair Trade News

MayanHands Huipile WeaversOn our Guatemala trips, we learned that for Mayan women, huipiles (woven and embroidered blouses) are treasures bestowed upon them by their ancestors.

“Our huipiles are suffering a kind of desecration.” Mayan weavers in Guatemala are alarmed at the possibility that their huipiles might disappear. They see danger coming from different directions. And they are speaking up about it and looking for solutions.
