Guilt-free Gelt: The Chocolate of Change

Guilt-free Gelt Tagline Contest WinnersThanks to everyone who participated in Fair Trade Judaica's Guilt-free Gelt tagline contest! We received fabulous submissions from all over the country (some made us laugh, some made us cry, some made us think!), and found the winner right in our own backyard! JUDY MASSARANO teaches Judaic Studies to 2nd graders at Oakland Hebrew Day School, and her inspiration for writing the tagline: "My thinking is that by buying this chocolate, funds and awareness can be raised to prevent future child trafficking and unsafe environments for all chocolate workers." We've put together a webpage with some of our favorite submissions.
Here is a moving piece written by Rabbi Menachem Creditor of Congregation Netivot Shalom in Berkeley and published in Zeek, that explores Chanukah's theme of liberation. Deep appreciation for his powerful writing and inspiration.

Join our 2014 Guatemala Trip

2014 Guatemala Trip DetailsFair Trade Judaica's inaugural 2013 trip to Guatemala was a major success, and we're looking forward to traveling there again January 30-February 12, 2014. This is a unique opportunity to spend Shabbat with the Jewish communities in Guatemala City, meet Fair Trade artisan groups who make beautiful Judaica products, and visit major cultural and historical sites. Experience firsthand the positive impact that Fair Trade has on the artisans and their communities. We'll be able to see several new products that were inspired from our first visit (pine needle challah trays, new challah covers, and more). Sample itinerary, logistics, and info can be found here.

Thank You Tikvat Israel

Chocolate and Jewish Values EventTHANKS so much to Congregation Tikvat Israel for organizing an inspiring, fun and educational weekend on fair trade and Judaism. Over 500 people purchased a broad array of fair trade products, studied Torah, learned about child labor in the cocoa fields, and ate some of the most delicious Peruvian homemade food ever – the array of chocolate desserts was beyond imagination, all made with fair trade cocoa! Their team of volunteers thought of everything! Thanks as well to Divine Chocolate, Wholesome Sweeteners, MayaWorks, Mayan Hands, and Upavim, for making this such a wonderful experience.
