Brass Caravan Menorah

TTVCaravanMenorah

Unique extended camel menorah has candleholders on top and bells on the sides of the camel. This Traveler’s Find item is cast in Dhokra brass, one of the oldest known forms of metal casting, founded by metal smiths of central India—the Dhokra people. Motifs are drawn mostly from folk culture.

The artisans use a lost-wax process to cast this statue. Each piece is modeled individually in wax around a hardened clay core. Layers of soft material are laid over the wax model and hardened into a mold. The wax between the core and the mold is melted or “lost” as the mold is heated. After this, molten brass is poured into the mold, which holds a negative impression of the wax model in all its detail. The hard core and mold become soft when they are fired, and are easily removed.
