Comitancillo Group (Guatemala)

There are 30 women who work with the Mayan Association for Research and Development (AMMID). They come from two different communities; one is called Dulce Hogar (Sweet Home) in the town of Taltimiche, and the other is called El Nuevo Amanecer (New Dawn) from the village of Reforma, in the area of Comitancillo, Guatemala.

The area is mountainous with very little land suitable for agriculture and livestock farming. Hurricane Stan in October 2005 destroyed about 80% of the harvests of corn, basic grains, and fruit, underscoring how critical it is for the woman to find markets for their traditional weaving and knitting skills.

The women like making the Mayan Hands’ kippot because the products sell well, and they get paid a fair price, which generates a good income for the artisans and their families.
